1808 Historic Alexandria Virginia Rowhouse

This photo views the side wall of an end-unit rowhouse, circa 1808, in historic Old Town Alexandria VA.  There is substantial bulging of this sold-brick wall.  This bulging is pulling outward both window's wooden lintels and has been repaired previous to this photo.  There is similar bulging outward of the foundation wall on a different part of the house, on this same side.  The mortar is generally very soft and sandy and easily removed, having deteriorated over the centuries.  This softening encourages movement, due to interior pressures, pushing walls outward over time.  It was later determined that this movement is not atypical for the age of this house, but it does need to be monitored.  This home is nearby to a favorite 18th and 19th-century restaurant of the Founding Fathers, still in use.  This restaurant still uses a couple of Martha Washington's recipes!  While visiting Alexandria, perhaps eating there, did Mr. Jefferson sleep here?
