Attic Heat Pump Installation

Attic Heat Pump Installation

There was only one spot in the attic of this Leesburg Virginia house where a heat pump could fit - and this is it!  They actually took down siding and framing to get a unit into it!  The only access to the unit is what you see here, from a small door behind a bedroom closet.  The owner has to come here monthly to replace the filter!  The buyer of this house is disabled and in his 60's.  Servicing this unit is difficult at best - there is very little clearance and the filter has to be bent to get it in and out.  A service technician would have to work on the unit from above, upside down.  No light was provided, so to replace the filter the buyer has to bring one with him on an extension cord.  This adds to the danger of making this climb.  The partially-sided wall under the unit is finished space inside the house and is not insulated.  The duct work array guarantees inefficient heating and cooling.  The drip pan is not level, and the condensate drain line is attached to it.  The pan is the only means of escape for the water.  And, in the future, if this heat pump needs to be replaced, siding and framing would have to be removed to get it out!
